Guwahati (Assam), June 1: Roz Ali, named the prime accused in the Nalbari scooter attack that killed student leader Madhurjya Barman, died Monday from bullet injuries sustained in a police encounter at Mukalmua while trying to escape.
Police said Barman, 19, and her friend Mridumudra Deka, 18, were attacked Saturday night near Gangapur by Roz Ali and Ashik Ali. Barman, Assistant General Secretary of West Nalbari Regional Students’ Union, died on the spot. Deka is in ICU at GMCH.
Roz Ali was shot during the arrest bid and declared dead at hospital. Ashik Ali remains at large. The case has triggered protests in Assam, with some groups alleging “love jihad” after reports of a rejected proposal, though police said the motive is still under investigation. Nalbari MLA Jayanta Malla Baruah condemned the killing and called for swift justice.
