Shillong(Meghalaya), May 31: Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya led hundreds of cyclists through Shillong on Sunday for the 76th edition of ‘Sundays on Cycle’, pitching cycling as Meghalaya’s fitness and sustainability tool ahead of the 2027 National Games.
Joined by MoS Raksha Khadse, Meghalaya Sports Minister Wailadmiki Shylla, athletes and the public, Mandaviya said cycling cuts fuel use, pollution and traffic while boosting health. He noted events at over 6,000 locations across India today under Fit India and urged the state to embed cycling in community life at district and block level.
Citing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s call to reduce fuel consumption amid West Asia tensions, Mandaviya said short-distance cycling supports energy conservation and environmental goals. Khadse called for greater public participation, saying cycling is gaining ground in Shillong as both fitness and environmental practice.
