Imphal (Manipur), May 29: Amid the ongoing hostage crisis, a truck driver from West Bengal died when militants ambushed a convoy of goods-laden vehicles in Ukhrul district on Friday. Manipur Police personnel also sustained injury in the incident.
According to police, suspected Kuki militants are behind the entire incident who opened fire on the convoy of goods-laden vehicles from hilltops overlooking Litan Bazar and T.M. Kasom village at Litan, where truck driver Nitish Kumar died on the spot. He is said to be a resident of Hooghly in West Bengal.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh strongly condemned the Ukhrul district incident on Friday. In an official statement, he said that unknown armed miscreants had carried out the ambush on a goods vehicle along National Highway-2 under Litan Police Station in Ukhrul district. He expressed his condolences over the death of the truck driver from West Bengal, who succumbed to bullet injuries in the unfortunate incident.
On the other hand, a joint team of security forces comprising the Border Security Force (BSF), Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), Rapid Action Force (RAF) of Manipur Police and district police have been continuing the operation in search of the 15 people kidnapped from different places of Naga and Kuki dominated areas earlier this month.
