Shillong(Meghalaya), March 3 : Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) MDC Rinaldo K Sangma has slammed former Balachanda MDC Sofiur Rehman’s views on ST certificate requirement, emphasizing GHADC’s constitutional mandate under Sixth Schedule is to preserve Garo customs and traditions. “Non-tribals can’t contest elections meant for tribal governance,” Sangma asserted.

Sangma urged Rehman to revisit Sixth Schedule provisions, citing Paragraphs 1, 2, 3, and 20, to understand GHADC’s exclusive powers for Garo tribals. Historical presence of non-tribals doesn’t confer rights to contest GHADC elections, he stressed.
