Guwahati (Assam), Jan 7: In a monumental stride, the Indian government has greenlit the construction of a 15.8km twin-tube underwater tunnel beneath the Brahmaputra River, poised to revolutionize connectivity in the Northeast. This audacious endeavor, linking Gohpur and Numaligarh, promises to slash travel time from 6.5 hours to a mere 30 minutes, weaving a new narrative of accessibility and progress.
As the tubes take shape, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and neighboring states will be knit together in a tighter, more seamless embrace, their economic and cultural ties strengthened. The tunnel’s strategic import is no less significant, set to bolster defense logistics and national security, particularly in the China border region.
With its 32-meter depth, this engineering marvel is a testament to India’s technological prowess. The ₹18,600 crore project is slated to break ground by 2025’s end, its completion a mere five years away. As the Brahmaputra yields to human ingenuity, the Northeast’s future shines brighter, illuminated by the promise of a new era.
