Shillong (Meghalaya), March 6: Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today categorically assured that his government will not compromise on the Meghalaya Land Transfer Act, 1971, amid plans to convert forest land into an Industrial Estate in Byrnihat.
Sangma’s statement came in response to concerns raised by Heavingstone Kharpran of the opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) regarding the proposed land conversion. The CM clarified that the 347-hectare land in question has not been officially declared as forest land as of March 6, 2025.
The Meghalaya Land Transfer Act, 1971, is a crucial legislation aimed at protecting the interests of Scheduled Tribes by regulating land transfers in the state. Sangma’s assurance has been welcomed by tribal groups and opposition parties, who have been vocal about their concerns regarding the proposed land conversion.
Other members, including Ardent Basaiawmoit of VPP and the Leader of Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma, also expressed their opposition to the proposed land conversion, citing concerns about the impact on tribal communities and the environment.
