Shillong(Meghalaya), Feb 8: Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, today, inaugurated the Academic Block, Girls’ Hostel & Boys’ Hostel of Williamnagar Government College, Mini Outdoor Stadium and the Entrepreneurship Cell under the Entrepreneurship Promotion Development Program at Williamnagar, East Garo Hills. Also present were Minister, PHE and MLA, Williamnagar, Marcuise N Marak, MLA, Rongjeng, Jim M Sangma, MLA, Amlarem, Lakhmen Rymbui and Chief Secretary, D P Wahlang besides senior officials from the Education department and district administration.
Speaking during the occasion, Chief Minister, Conrad K Sangma, expressing his gratitude to all who were instrumental in the establishment of the college building said that the Williamnagar College was provincialized in 2008 under the leadership of Late P A Sangma and Late Donkupar Roy but since then no investment has been made to improve the college. “To improve the quality of Education the infrastructure also needs to be improved,” he said. He informed that over 500 crores has been spent since 2018 in improving and upgrading educational infrastructures all across the State and expressed a great sense of satisfaction in inaugurating the Academic Block and the students’ hostels.
“There is a common factor in all the three inaugurations today and that is the youth,” he said and added that the government through its various programs and policies is committed to the youth of the State. He said that nit only good education but also employment and livelihood opportunities need to be provided to the youth. He further outlined the various programs of the government like Prime Entrepreneurship, YESS Meghalaya, CM Elevate, Meghalaya Games, Grassroots Music program etc that are aimed at providing a platform and livelihood opportunities to the youth.
The Chief Minister also said that towns like Williamnagar and Resu should be able to host the Meghalaya Games in future. “Therefore, as proposed by the MLA, Williamnagar I will sanction the amount for the construction of a Track and Field in the Willamnagar Mini Stadium,” he announced. He also highlighted development projects for Williamnagar and East Garo Hills in general like the Town Beautification Project and the Critical Care Unit and the 50 Bedded Mother & Childcare Hospital for which 20 crores has been sanctioned.
In conclusion, the Chief Minister, urged the principal and the teachers at the college to work passionately to make Williamnagar Government College a centre of knowledge, research and an institution that will transform the lives of the youth and also informed that the Cabinet will soon clear the proposal to include Science and Arts streams in Williamnagar, Baghmara and Sohra government colleges.
In his speech, Minister, Education, Rakkam A Sangma, urged the teachers to work dedicatedly so that the same quality of education of big-name colleges of cities is imparted in Williamnagar Government College. Likewise, he urged the students to study sincerely to bring fame and glory to the college.
