Shillong (Meghalaya), Sep 3 : Opposition Congress today reiterated its demand to set up an independent inquiry to probe into the killing of surrendered HNLC leader C. Thangkhiew by state police Aug 13 last .
Speaking to the media, the Leader of Opposition, Dr. Mukul M. Sangma said that under the present circumstances , it will not be possible to have an independent inquiry relating to the unfortunate Mawlai incident as all those involved in the incident are yet to be suspended.
When asked about the resolution moved by the Meghalaya Opposition Congress to remove the Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, Metbah Lyngdoh, Dr. Sangma said that it would not like to divulge the party’s strategies and everything will unfold when the Assembly takes up the matter in the coming Autumn Session of the state Assembly.
Dr. Sangma said under Clause(c) of Article 179 of the Constitution and Rule 135 of the Rules and Procedure of Business in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, it allows the Opposition to move the resolution for the removal of the Speaker.
The opposition Congress in Meghalaya Assembly yesterday, Aug 2 submitted a petition seeking to move a resolution for the removal of Assembly Speaker Metbah Lyngdoh. The petition was signed by four Congress legislators – Zenith M. Sangma, George B. Lyngdoh, Kimfa S. Marbaniang and Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang and was submitted to the Assembly Secretariat ahead of the Autumn Session of the Meghalaya Assembly scheduled from Sep10.
Three days have been allotted for taking up Government’s Business and three days to Private Members’ Business.
