Resubelpara(Meghalaya), Aug 9: Angry at not being allowed to open their shops over the weekend due to the ongoing ‘Weekend Lockdown’ in the state of Meghalaya, angry residents of Snalgre in North Garo Hills (NGH) yesterday were involved in a fracas with policemen that came to enforce the lockdown leading to one police vehicle getting slightly damaged.
The entire state has been undergoing weekend lockdowns wherein all shops and establishments have remained closed. The 5 day week, that too with severe hour restrictions, has been frustrating for residents of the entire state, with daily labourers and small shopkeepers being the worst affected.
While there has been no report earlier of violence against the decision of weekend lockdown imposition, many feel more relaxation in terms of business hours and increased labour time is a necessary requirement.
The incident allegedly took place yesterday afternoon after police personnel went to the village over reports of shops being kept open during the weekend lockdown. Upon being asked to close their shops, some of the villagers attempted to assault the police personnel.
There was however, no major damage done or reports of injuries though a case has been registered against those that were responsible for the act.
“We understand the situation that the people are going through but our orders are to ensure the lockdown is in place for the good of all. A case has been registered as this sets a very bad precedent. Investigation into the matter is currently ongoing,” confirmed superintendent of police, NGH, Abraham T Sangma.
The SP added that during the fracas only the front glass of the police vehicle was damaged.
