Kokrajhar (Assam), April 21: Parts of north eastern region and expereicing heavy showers during the last couple of days.
The rains are also accompanied by thunder squalls and hailstorms.
Assam experienced isolated heavy rains, thunder squall, and wind blowing at the speed of 50-60 kmph in various districts .
Heavy showers hits several districts of Bodoland Territorial Areas District(BTAD) including Kokrajhar district as well it’s adjoining areas today damaging properties and agricultural crops.
The heavy showers hit around 12.20 pm this afternoon and uprooted trees ,electric posts at various places in the districts that damaged properties.
In Chirang,the areas affected include Shyamtaibari,Champa,Basugaon area.
Assam Social welfare minister Pramila Rani Brahma rushed to Karigaon to take stock about the situation .
She informed that state government would take measures to repair the damaged houses.She has urged the district administration to conduct a survey of areas affected and damages in the district .
In Meghalaya a severe hailstorm ravaged eight villages in the Maweit area under West Khasi Hills district.
Residents of the area informed that the hailstorm which struck the area at around 1:30 am yesterday was accompanied by a thunderstorm with gale force winds. “The hailstones were so big that roofing sheets of many houses were riddled with holes,” some of the residents said .
Thankfully in spite of the massive damage caused to the houses, nobody was hurt as residents of the area rushed to find whatever shelter they could from the barrage of hailstones.
The most severely affected by the hailstorm is Maweit village where around 65 houses have been damaged besides two other houses which have been destroyed by the high intensity winds.
In Nongpathar village meanwhile, 17 houses have been severely damaged by the hailstorm. This is followed by Nongtraw village with 11 severely damaged houses, Diengsning village and Mawlait village with 6 houses each and Umthli village with 5 houses, Umbi with 3 houses and Camino with 2 severely damaged houses.
As per information provided by the respective village leaders, the total number of houses which have been severely and partially damaged total 115 in number in the Maweit area.
Meanwhile, the Block Development Officer at Nongstoiñ, Clement Mawkon informed that the hailstorm and high intensity winds have also affected other villages including Nongpathar, Nongtraw, Umthli, Mawlangriang,
Nongkyllang, MawiongLumsyntiew, Mawkawah, Pyndenglawar, Upper New Nongstoiñ, New Nongstoiñ, Mawtynrong and Tiehsaw.
He also informed that there were no major injuries sustained by any of the residents of these villages.
With reports of the damage still streaming in, Mawkon said that a clearer picture on the situation will only be available tomorrow after which this information will be forwarded to the Deputy Commissioner for necessary action.
The thunderstorm has also affected parts of RiMuliang especially Mawthohkrah.
In this regard, the Block Development Officer of Mawshynrut Block, T Diengngan said that the thunderstorm has damaged several houses at Malangkona, Domjarain and Umdang.
He also said that in spite of the intensity of the thunderstorm, most of the houses were not severely damaged where the roofs of only about 6 houses at Malangkona and another at Domjarain were partially damaged.
