Shillong(Meghalaya), Jan 7 : Chief Secretary, GP Wahlang, announced today that the state government is willing to re-engage in talks with the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), despite the first round of discussions ending in failure. Wahlang stated that the government has allowed HNLC representatives to return to their hideouts and deliberate on the key issues to be addressed during future talks.
In addition to the proposed talks, Wahlang revealed that the state government has requested the central government to allocate defense land for the establishment of a Harijan Colony in Shillong.
Regarding the rampant issue of illegal coal mining in Meghalaya, Wahlang acknowledged the numerous reports, but clarified that the government is yet to receive concrete confirmation. This comes after the Meghalaya High Court directed the Chief Secretary to stop illegal mining activities without delay and ensure the implementation of Supreme Court and National Green Tribunal directives.
