Resubelapara, (Meghalaya), Oct 23: In a significant move, the Meghalaya Cabinet, led by Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, met here in North Garo Hills as part of the Cabinet on the Move initiative.
The cabinet approved two crucial ordinances aimed at regulating private medical institutions in the state.
The key approvals include the passage of the Meghalaya Private Medical Institution (Regulation of Admission, Fixation of Fees and Reservation) Ordinance, 2024, and the Meghalaya Medical College Regulation and Admission into MBBS Course, 2024.
These ordinances will have a profound impact on the state’s medical education landscape. The Meghalaya Private Medical Institution Ordinance, 2024, will regulate admissions, fees, and reservations in private medical institutions, ensuring transparency and accountability. Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Medical College Regulation and Admission into MBBS Course, 2024, will oversee the regulation of medical colleges and admissions to MBBS courses.
The cabinet’s approval paves the way for the constitution of a Regulatory Body, which will be notified after the ordinances are signed by the Hon’ble Governor of Meghalaya. The regulatory committee will ensure fixation of fees, implementation of reservation policies, and allotment of seats as per government norms and court rulings.
Notably, the clearance of these ordinances will enable the University of Science and Technology, Meghalaya (USTM), specifically PA Sangma Medical College, to begin operations soon after the signing of the ordinance. This development is expected to boost medical education in the state and provide more opportunities for students.
With these approvals, the Meghalaya government aims to enhance the quality and accessibility of medical education, benefiting students and the healthcare sector as a whole.
