New Delhi, Aug 27: In a grand ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan, President Droupadi Murmu felicitated NorthEast United Football Club for their remarkable victory in the 2025 edition of the IndianOil Durand Cup. The club made history by winning the tournament for the second consecutive time, a feat last achieved in 1991.
NorthEast United FC’s dominant performance in the final saw them defeat Diamond Harbour FC 6-1, with six different players scoring for the team. Alaaeddine Ajaraie shone bright, claiming both the Golden Ball and Golden Boot with eight goals, while goalkeeper Gurmeet Singh earned the Golden Glove for his consistency.
The President’s Cup, instituted in 1956 by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, is a symbol of excellence and honor, reinforcing the tournament’s deep ties with the nation’s heritage. The ceremony not only celebrated NorthEast United FC’s achievement but also highlighted the enduring legacy of the Indian Armed Forces in nurturing football and strengthening national unity.
Club owner John Abraham expressed his delight, stating that winning the Durand Cup is a great honor and achievement. He added that they aim to make this a habit and win the tournament every year, contributing to the Indian football ecosystem and making India proud.
