Shillong ( Meghalaya), Nov 12 : The Khasi community in Meghalaya commenced the revered Nongkrem festival today, a five-day celebration of thanksgiving, rejuvenation, and spiritual renewal. This ancient ritual, steeped in tradition and culture, honors the goddess Ka Blei Synshar, protector of the Khasi people.
“The Nongkrem festival is a significant event for our community, where we express gratitude for the harvest season’s bounty and seek blessings for the coming year,” said Syiem of the Khasi state.
Rituals and ceremonies, led by the Syiem and Ka Khadduh , include the ceremonial sacrifice of goats and pigs, symbolizing appeasement of the gods. Key ceremonies comprise Pom Blai, Ka Shad, Ka Kit Dum, and U Riew Roy.
“Nongkrem preserves our cultural heritage and strengthens our connection with our ancestors,” stated an elder. “We must continue to promote and protect our traditions.”
The festival showcases Khasi heritage, featuring traditional music, dance, and artisanal crafts.
