Shillong (Meghalaya), Nov 18: Two students from the Chemistry Department of North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU), Daritngen Pohdukhei and Stephanie Shadap, were involved in a tragic accident near Gate-2 of the campus. The students were critically injured after being hit by a Maruti car driven by a security guard employed at the Northeastern Indira Gandhi Regional Institute of Health and Medical Sciences (NEIGRIHMS).
The security guard, Permen M Sangma, was allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and lost control of the vehicle. The car first collided with a parked scooter and then veered towards the gate, hitting the students. CCTV footage captured the incident, showing the car speeding towards the students’ moments before the collision.
The security guard was arrested and detained by the police. A case has been registered against him under Section 109 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for attempt to murder. The vehicle has been seized, and further investigation is underway to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. The police are awaiting the Motor Vehicle Inspector’s report to assess whether mechanical failure contributed to the accident.
Both students remain in critical condition at Nazareth Hospital. The security guard is in police custody, and the police may seek police custody after producing him before the court.
