Shillong (Meghalaya), Nov 19 : In a landmark judgment, the Meghalaya High Court has ordered the state government to take immediate action to protect the Myntdu River, a vital source of cultivation, drinking water, and other purposes for approximately 40,000 people in the Jaintia region.
The court’s directions come after reviewing reports from the learned Amicus Curiae and the state government, represented by K. Khan, AAG.
The High Court has directed the state government to continue efforts to prevent soil erosion and remove construction debris from the river, issue an administrative order prohibiting construction materials from being deposited into the river. regulate construction work near the river, maintaining a safe distance from the bank and implement urgent measures to facilitate free water flow, considering the dry season.
The High Court observed that the Myntdu River holds significant cultural and economic importance and indiscriminate construction and erosion threaten the river’s sustainability.
The Myntdu River flows through the Jaintia region and into Bangladesh, supporting two fertile valleys: Pynthor Nein and Pynthor Wah. Locals worship the river as a goddess and regard it as divine angel guardian.
The state government has initiated steps to address concerns, including removing debris and preventing soil erosion. The government must submit a compliance report within four weeks.
“The court’s order is a significant step towards protecting Meghalaya’s environmental heritage. We will ensure compliance and work towards preserving the Myntdu River for future generations.” said K. Khan, AAG
The next hearing has been fixed on December 17.
