Shillong(Meghalaya), Oct 23: A staggering Rs 2,300 crore road project in Meghalaya has been marred by allegations of widespread corruption and embezzlement, sparking outrage and demands for accountability. The scandal has raised questions about the misuse of taxpayer’s money and the compromise on infrastructure quality.
According to sources, investigations have uncovered shocking irregularities, including inflated contracts, fake invoices, and unauthorized payments to contractors. Allegations point to the involvement of a former PWD Minister, prominent contractors, and senior government officials.
The scam has resulted in huge financial losses, with estimates suggesting that over Rs 500 crore has been misappropriated. The substandard road construction has compromised the safety of commuters and hindered economic growth.
“This scam is a betrayal of public trust,” said Leader of the Opposition, Dr. Mukul Sangma. “We demand immediate arrests and prosecution of those involved. The government must take concrete steps to recover the misappropriated funds.”
Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has ordered a high-level inquiry, promising swift action. “We will not tolerate corruption in any form. Those found guilty will face the full force of the law,” he assured.
However, opposition parties are pushing for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) takeover, citing concerns about the state government’s ability to conduct a fair probe.
“We urge the Centre to intervene and hand over the case to the CBI,” said former Rajya Sabha MP, Wansuk Syiem. “Only a neutral agency can unravel the entire conspiracy and bring the perpetrators to justice.”
Sources indicate that the state government may soon recommend a CBI investigation, following mounting pressure from opposition parties and civil society.
“The state government is considering a CBI probe to ensure a fair and impartial investigation,” said a senior government official, requesting anonymity.
As the investigation unfolds, the people of Meghalaya demand transparency and justice. The scandal has highlighted the need for greater accountability in government projects and stricter oversight mechanisms.
The Meghalaya government faces mounting pressure to clean up the mess and restore public trust.
