Shillong (Meghalaya), June 18: The High Court of Meghalaya has delivered a significant order in a Public Interest Litigation case related to the strengthening and improvement of the Jowai-Ratacherra project road of National Highway-6. The case, PIL No. 11/2022, was heard by a bench comprising Chief Justice I.P. Mukerji and Justice W. Diengdoh.
The court was informed that the strengthening and improvement work on the 102.2 km stretch of NH-6 commenced on March 22, 2024, by NHAI. The project was entrusted to two contractors: Purvanchal Buildtech Pvt. Ltd. for the 51 km stretch from Jowai to Wahiajer and Dhar Construction Company for the 51.255 km stretch from Wahiajer to Ratacherra.
As per the latest update, the work completion status has improved, with 75% of the work completed in the 51 km sector and 80% completed in the 51.255 km sector. The NHAI’s counsel attributed the delay in completion to bad weather conditions and requested further time to file a completion report.
Considering the submissions and current weather conditions, the court has granted NHAI time till August 18, 2025, to file a completion report. The Amicus Curiae has been directed to closely monitor the progress and file a counter report, if necessary, by the same date. The PIL has been listed for further orders on August 20.
