Shillong (Meghalaya), June 26: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma emphasized the need for a holistic approach to address the drug menace in the state, while attending the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking event at the State Convention Centre here.
The event, organized by the Social Welfare Department in collaboration with Meghalaya Police, Meghalaya AIDS Control Society, and the Drug Reduction, Elimination and Action Mission (DREAM), was themed “Breaking the Chains: Prevention, Treatment and Recovery for All.”
CM Sangma stressed that tackling drug abuse requires a comprehensive strategy that goes beyond law enforcement, involving health systems, education, youth engagement, and strong community partnerships. “We cannot look at this as just a law enforcement issue,” he said, highlighting the government’s commitment to addressing the issue through a multi-faceted approach.
The event brought together leaders, frontline workers, and communities to raise awareness about the adverse effects of drug abuse and promote collective action to prevent and treat addiction.
