Shillong, Oct 5: Nine colleges, two debates, one democracy classroom.
The Ri-Bhoi District-level Youth Parliament kicked off at Union Christian College on Monday with a clear pitch ” Empowering Youth for Democratic Leadership and Responsible Citizenship.”
Sponsored by the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, the two-day programme has transformed students into legislators — debating, questioning and voting on issues that touch their lives.
On the table: National Education Policy, 2020 and Social Media and Youth Mental Health: A Tool for Connection or a Threat to Well-being.
Inaugurating the session, Speaker Thomas A. Sangma said India needs young voices and honest leadership, reminding students that every law on schools, hospitals, roads and jobs starts as an idea debated and amended in the legislature.
“Youth Parliament lets you experience how laws are made and how decisions are reached through discussion, not conflict. Listen carefully, speak clearly, respect dissent — these are life skills. The future of democracy depends on how well we talk, listen and work together,” the Speaker said.
He said no single person has all wisdom, good decisions need many voices, and Meghalaya’s traditional institutions already embody democracy through discussion and consensus.
Deputy Chief Whip Ronnie V. Lyngdoh said, “Democracy cannot be strengthened unless youth participate. In developed democracies, citizens are politically active. Active engagement makes democracy accountable.”
Assembly Secretary Malthus S. Sangma said the government wants youth to succeed, and confidence comes from platforms like this. “It is a simulated legislature that teaches democratic principles, constitutional rules, parliamentary etiquette, public speaking, critical thinking and leadership and patience to respect differing opinions,” he said.
Principal Dr. R.M. Manih and IQAC Coordinator Dr. J.P. Marak were also present.
Over two days, students will get hands-on exposure to parliamentary processes and what it means to be a responsible citizen
