New Delhi: Sep 23 In a major boost for BJP in Meghalaya politics, 8 United Democratic Party (UDP) MLAs from the north eastern state joined the main ruling party at the Centre on Wednesday much to the worry for the incumbent NPP-led MDA Government.
Union minister Kiren Rijiju, senior BJP leader Sambit Patra welcomed them namely Lahkmen Rymbui (Amlarem), Pius Marwein (Ranikor), Kyrmen Shylla (Khliehriat), Mayralborn Syiem (Nongpoh), Matthew Beyondstar Kurbah (Mawphlang), Ollan Singh Suin (Mawsynram), Balajied Kupar Synrem (Shella), Synshar Lyngdoh Thabah (Sohiong) here on Wednesday.
Significantly, all of these MLAs won from ST-reserved constituencies in the 2023 Meghalaya Assembly elections.
In his address, Kiren Rijiju said, “We welcome eight elected members of the assembly, MLAs of Meghalaya, into the BJP family.”
According to Rijiju, the MLAs were highly impressed by the development and transformation of the Northeast and Meghalaya over the past 12 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The BJP won 2 seats in Meghalaya namely Alexander Laloo Hek, and Sanbor Shullai in 2023.
With this, the UDP remains in the state assembly with 4 MLAs.
