Tura , Sept 21: Garo Hills’ mother and child healthcare received its biggest boost in years on Monday as Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma inaugurated the new 50-bed annex at the District Maternity & Child Hospital, Tura, and launched Mother & Child Care Kits for new mothers.
The new wing will add critical bed capacity, ease overcrowding and significantly upgrade care for mothers and infants from across West Garo Hills.
The Chief Minister, who distributed the first set of care kits to mothers in the wards, said the government has put health, education and social welfare at the centre of its spending since 2018, with the three sectors accounting for nearly one-fourth of the State Budget. Education alone gets Rs 3,000-3,500 crore annually, he said

True development, he said, is not about how much is spent but how many lives are saved. Calling health and education “sticky sectors”, he said investments made today take five to ten years to show, and Meghalaya is now seeing those results.
