New Delhi, Sep 17: The Supreme Court on Thursday expressed grave concern over the report of unnatural deaths in the relief camps in Manipur set up in the time of ethnic clashes across the state three years back.
The country’s top court has asked for a detailed report from the Manipur Chief Secretary on the reports of as many as 25 cases of unnatural deaths. Further, the respondents have been asked to enclose details of post mortem reports along with the affidavits apart from reports on measures to get rid of these in future.
A Bench of Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant and Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana issued the directives when the division bench was taking note of material placed before it concerning deaths and other difficulties in the relief camps.
The bench said, “We direct the Chief Secretary of Manipur to submit a report about all the 25 unnatural deaths reported in the newspapers…along with a post-mortem report identifying the cause and what preventive steps have been taken to avoid the same.”
The court further asked the Manipur government to explain the preventive measures in the relief camps to ensure the safety of these people who were rendered homeless during the ethnic clashes.
