Guwahati(Assam), April 1 :Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the Centre’s sanction of a ₹18,500 crore underwater tunnel project under the Brahmaputra River, aiming to boost connectivity in Northeast India. The project will reduce travel distance between Gohpur and Numaligarh, generating substantial employment opportunities for locals. It features twin tubes for road and rail traffic, connecting NH-15 and NH-715, and is expected to be completed in five years.
The tunnel will enhance multi-modal integration, linking key railway stations, airports, and inland waterway terminals. The government estimates it will generate nearly 80 lakh person-days of direct and indirect employment.
Opposition parties have raised concerns about the project’s environmental impact and potential displacement of communities.
