Shillong (Meghalaya), March 25 : The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly’s Committee on Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes inspected the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) at Pahamsyiem, Nongpoh, highlighting infrastructure gaps and operational challenges. Led by MLA Gabriel Wahlang, the committee identified issues with the Girls’ Hostel, including lack of essential facilities.
The inspection aims to inform a comprehensive report to the State Government for necessary intervention. Wahlang emphasized addressing these issues to ensure quality education and long-term sustainability. The Pahamsyiem EMRS is one of 38 EMRS institutions sanctioned in Meghalaya, with 13 currently under construction.
The Eklavya Model Residential Schools scheme, launched in 1997, aims to provide quality education to tribal students in remote areas. With an estimated investment of ₹1,400 crore, the initiative seeks to establish at least one EMRS in every eligible block with a significant tribal population.
