Shillong (Meghalaya), March 22 : In a landmark move, the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) has launched its academy at Polo Ground, signaling a new era for football in the state. The academy, coinciding with MFA’s golden jubilee year, aims to nurture young talent and produce players who’ll represent Meghalaya and India.
60 young players, aged 10-13, have been selected for the U-12 and U-14 categories, with top coaches like Playerson Syiemlieh and Amit Rai guiding them. MFA President Hamletson Dohling urged the youngsters to stay focused and disciplined, while Vice-President Cliff Nongrum emphasized the need to develop local talent.
The academy plans to offer residential options, scholarships, and training for girls soon, with infrastructural work underway at the MFA Ground. With few Meghalaya players in national leagues like ISL, the academy aims to bridge the gap.
