Shillong (Meghalaya), March 16 : The Meghalaya Cabinet has approved a six-month extension of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council’s (GHADC) term, effective from April 18 to October 18, 2026. This decision follows violent protests against non-tribal participation in the election process.
New Executive Committee Formed:
Former CEM Albinush Marak resigned, and Dharmonath Sangma was elected as the new CEM. The new committee will consult stakeholders on candidate eligibility rules and related amendments.
Government’s Plan:
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong stated that the government and the new executive committee will deliberate on candidate-eligibility rules and amendments over the next 6 months. The decision aims to meet people’s aspirations without political motives.
