Shillong (Meghalaya), March 13: The Shillong Muslim Forum has appealed to Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma to ensure protection of religious institutions and maintain peace in the state, following recent unrest in West Garo Hills. The forum condemns violence and damage to places of worship, including the reported vandalization of Tura Jama Masjid.
In a statement, the forum clarifies that “Allahu Akbar” is a sacred expression of faith, not a call to violence. They support lawful efforts to safeguard indigenous people’s rights and interests, valuing the peaceful coexistence with tribal communities.
“We humbly appeal that all faith expressions be treated with understanding and respect so that every community in Meghalaya continues to feel secure and valued,” the forum says.
The forum requests the government to ensure protection of all places of worship and community institutions, and to take steps to prevent such incidents from recurring. Copies of the appeal have been sent to Union Minister Kiren Rijiju and Meghalaya government officials.
