Shillong (Meghalaya), Feb 19 : Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has assured the Assembly that the proposal to carve out Shillong Agglomerate from East Khasi Hills and create a separate district will be examined in detail. The move is aimed at improving governance and public service delivery in the state capital, which is facing unprecedented urban expansion and population growth.
The proposal, tabled by West Shillong MLA Paul Lyngdoh, has been supported by several other MLAs, citing administrative convenience, law enforcement, and infrastructure challenges. The Shillong Agglomerate has a population of over 5.32 lakh and is home to nine Assembly constituencies.
The government will scrutinize the proposal based on eight administrative benchmarks, including geographical size, population, distance from existing headquarters, and availability of funds. A high-level committee headed by the Chief Secretary will conduct a detailed assessment before submitting its recommendations.
