Tura (Meghalaya), Jan 1: The state is mourning the loss of a true stalwart, Skylance G. Momin, the first Garo MPS officer and former Inspector General of Police (IGP), who passed away today at the age of 82. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma expressed deep sorrow over Momin’s demise, highlighting his invaluable contributions to public service and peacebuilding in the Garo Hills.
Momin played a pivotal role in facilitating the ceasefire process with the Achik Liberation Matgrik Army (ALMA), significantly contributing to lasting peace in the region. He was widely respected for his efforts to modernize traditional institutions and strengthen the Nokma system, securing government support for the construction of Nokma Kachari (traditional courts/offices) across the Garo Hills.
A founding member of the 100 Drums Wangala Committee and former President of the Nokma Council, Momin remained deeply engaged in social and traditional institutions post-retirement. He founded the influential Council of Nokmas, uniting traditional Garo heads to safeguard their welfare and collective interests.
The National People’s Party (NPP) has extended heartfelt condolences to Momin’s family, friends, and the people of Garo Hills. May his noble soul rest in eternal peace.
