Shillong (Meghalaya), June 17: In response to the alarming increase in HIV infections in Meghalaya, Health Minister Dr. M Ampareen Lyngdoh convened a high-level meeting with medical experts and officials to develop strategies to curb the spread of the virus.
According to Dr. Lyngdoh, key contributors to the growing number of cases include needle-sharing among drug users and unprotected sexual activity, particularly involving commercial sex workers. The Minister also highlighted the lack of voluntary testing as a significant challenge in addressing the issue.
To combat the spread of HIV, Dr. Lyngdoh emphasized the need for widespread awareness campaigns to educate the public on HIV prevention. She stressed the importance of immediate and targeted interventions to contain the virus and protect the state’s population.
The meeting aimed to formulate effective strategies to address the rising HIV cases in Meghalaya, and the Minister’s office is expected to announce further initiatives in the coming days.
