Shillong (Meghalaya), Nov 02: Renowned filmmaker and theatre personality Kulada Bhattacharjee passed away on Friday, Nov 1, in Guwahati, Assam, at the age of 85. His demise marks the end of an era in Assam’s cultural landscape.
Born in 1937, Bhattacharjee spent over five decades contributing to Assam’s theatre and cinema. His notable films include, Sakuntala, Latighati, Chikmik Bijulee, Bhagya, Prabhati Pakhir Gaan, Ramdhenu, Surjyasta, Cactus, Dikchow Banat Palaax, Maj Rati Keteki, and Village Rockstars. He also directed plays like Nibaran Bhattacharyya, revolutionizing Assam’s theatre scene.
Bhattacharjee’s connection to Shillong was deep, with his brother, Kamona Bhattacharjee, being a respected educator at St. Edmund’s College. His nephew, Kishalay Bhattacharjee, is a writer and former journalist with NDTV.
Kulada Bhattacharjee is survived by his wife, two sons, and a daughter. His legacy continues to inspire new generations of artists and filmmakers in Assam and beyond.
