Shillong ( Meghalaya ) , Jan 26 : School teacher Trinity Saioo, a leading farmer from Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya is a proud recipient of the Padma Shri award, this year.
Saioo helped the illiterate women with organic certification, marketing, documentation to avail subsidies as well.
Saioo led 800 women in Jaintia Hills region to cultivate and boost the popularity of indigenous, globally popular high curcumin content Lakadong variety of turmeric.
When , she started her mission she had only 800 farmers, but today federation can boast of 100 turmeric self help groups (SHGs) .
The foundation today exports Lakadong turmeric across North eastern states and even Kerala and Karnataka.
Saioo was also instrumental in mobilizing growers and expanding the area of Lakadong turmeric farming in the state .
Lakadong is considered to be one of the finest quality turmeric in the country and has medicinal values .
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma took to twitter to congratulate the lady farmer.
