Guwahati (Assam), May 19 : Amidst much confusion among the medical fraternity and public about the death of a 27 -year -old male due to Black Fungus , the hospital authorities have finally confirmed that the patient had indeed succumbed to Covid related rhino—cerebral mucormycosis( Black Fungus) with diabetic ketoacidosis and complications leading to multi organ failure.
A press -statement issued by the hospital authorities said that A 27-year-old male hailing from Nagaon District, a known diabetic was detected as Covid 19 RTPCR positive on 6th May 2021 and admitted in a Covid care center at Nagaon. Subsequently he tested Rapid Antigen Test negative on 12th May 2021 and was discharged from the center. From 15th May 2021, he developed decreased vision in both eyes and other post Covid complications at his home.
The statement further added that he was brought to Emergency of Apollo Hospitals, Guwahati on 16th May 2021, in a very critical state where he was duly attended to by team of physicians and admitted on 16th May 2021 at approximately 12:50 AM for ICU care. The necessary investigations along clinical lines were sent and the treatment was started under team of intensivists and consultants from other super specialties.
The patient was diagnosed as Covid related rhino—cerebral mucormycosis with diabetic ketoacidosis and complications leading to multi organ failure. In spite of the best efforts by the clinical team the patient expired at 6 AM on 19th May 2021.
