Guwahati (Assam), May 19: Assamese actress Aimee Baruah walked onto the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival wearing a muga silk mekhela sador adorned with ancient Assamese designs such as Goj Bota and Gam Kharu.
The Goj Bota design is an ancient pattern from Assam, featuring intricate floral and geometric shapes that date back to the time of the Ahom Dynasty when muga silk was a luxury and still is considered so. This design symbolizes the rich cultural and natural beauty of Assam
On the other hand, the Gum Kharu motif is a traditional symbol of prosperity and protection deeply rooted in Assamese culture.
“While stepping on the red carpet of the Cannes Film Festival for the third time, I proudly stepped as an Assamese with my identity and pride. Two hundred years old flower basha muga dress, gamkharu in hand, Assamese gamosa, rihar”, said Aimee in a FB post.
“And embracing our heritage-pride on the ramp full of Cannes Film Festival with orchid orchid flowers, we are overwhelmed with the blessings of Assamese people”, the post added
She further said,” While stepping onto the iconic red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival for the third time, I did so once again while firmly embracing my identity and self-respect as a proud Assamese. Representing our heritage, I was thrilled to walk the ramp in a two-hundred-year-old motif depicted on my Muga filled with intricate traditional designs, Gamkharu on my wrist, Assamese gamosa, Riha, and Kopou Phul (foxtail orchids) in my hairbun. Special thanks to everyone for all your love & support”.
