Guwahati (Assam), Dec 28: Tucked away in the quaint Sarumotoria neighborhood of Guwahati lies a modest two-bedroom house that holds a special significance in the hearts of locals. This unassuming abode was once the rented residence of none other than India’s 13th Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh.
As one steps inside the house, memories of Dr. Singh’s humility and simplicity come alive. The rented house was owned by Hemopraba Saika, the wife of former Assam Chief Minister Hiteshwar Saikia. Singh was known to be a humble and down-to-earth tenant, always paying his rent on time. In fact, Hemopraba Saika recalled that Singh was one of her best tenants, and he and his wife had many memorable moments in that house.
For Dr. Singh, this house was more than just a temporary residence; it was a home away from home, where he spent quality time with his wife. The locals remember him as a kind and gentle soul, who would often interact with them.
As the news of Dr. Singh’s passing spread, the people of Guwahati gathered outside his former residence, paying their respects to the man who had left an indelible mark on their lives. The humble house in Sarumotoria stands as a testament to Dr. Singh’s enduring legacy, a reminder of the values of simplicity, humility, and compassion that he embodied throughout his life.
He and his wife would often spend time there, and Singh was a regular voter from the Dispur constituency and a Member of Parliament (MP) from Assam.
Singh’s simplicity and humility were evident in his interactions with people. Even as Prime Minister, he would readily agree to pose for photos, as seen when he re-posed for a photo at a polling booth in Dispur after a journalist missed the initial shot. These anecdotes showcase the endearing personality of Dr. Manmohan Singh, a leader who remained grounded despite holding high office.
