Shillong (Meghalaya), Dec 17: In a major blow to local taxi operators, Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Sniawbhalang Dhar has rejected a proposal to restrict outside tourist taxis from operating in the state. The All Khasi Meghalaya Tourist Taxi Association (AKMTTA) had requested the government to stop outside taxis, citing concerns about competition and revenue loss.
However, Dhar cited legal constraints, stating that the Advocate General had advised against restricting outside vehicles from entering Meghalaya. Instead, the government will urge hoteliers, resort owners, and tour operators to prioritize local tourist taxis for visitors.
Speaking to reporters, Dhar emphasized the need for local taxi operators to up their game, ensuring vehicles are fit, neat, and clean, and drivers are disciplined, to provide a positive experience for tourists. “We want to promote tourism, not restrict it,” he said.
The decision has disappointed some local taxi operators, who feel they are being squeezed out by outside competition. “It’s unfair that we are not being given priority,” said a local taxi operator. “We have invested in our vehicles and trained our drivers, but still, we are not able to compete with outside taxis.”
The government, however, is exploring alternative solutions, including developing a mobile app to showcase Meghalaya’s attractions and services, and promoting eco-tourism initiatives.
