Tura (Meghalaya), Oct 25: A solemn memorial service was held in Tura to mark the 35th death anniversary of Capt. Williamson A. Sangma, Meghalaya’s first Chief Minister and a visionary statesman. The event honoured his leadership and legacy, which laid the foundation for Meghalaya’s identity and peaceful attainment of statehood.
The ceremony included the release of a book titled “Capt. Williamson A. Sangma – Architect of Meghalaya,” authored by Dr. Andrew Simons. The book was released by Thomas A. Sangma, Speaker of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, who attended as the Chief Guest.
In his address, Thomas A. Sangma reflected on his personal bond with Capt. Sangma, highlighting his commitment to democratic values, peace, and unity among the state’s tribes. He praised Capt. Sangma’s leadership during the Hills State Movement, which showcased his courage, integrity, and principled governance.
The author, Dr. Andrew Simons, expressed gratitude to Capt. Sangma’s family and the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Library for providing archival materials. He stated that the book aims to inform younger generations about Capt. Sangma’s life, leadership, and principles of non-violence.
The event concluded with a heartfelt tribute to Capt. Williamson A. Sangma, whose ideals continue to inspire Meghalaya’s present and future generations.
