Shillong (Meghalaya), July 24: The Meghalaya Urban Affairs Department has successfully relocated 282 street vendors from Khyndailad to the 1st floor of the MUDA Parking Lot. This initiative, undertaken in compliance with directives from the Meghalaya High Court, aims to regulate street vending and reduce traffic congestion in the city.
The relocation effort was made possible through extensive consultations with the Town Vending Committee, Shillong Municipal Board, and District Administration. The vendors, who were allotted stalls through a transparent draw of lots, will receive a one-time allowance of ₹10,000 and a monthly support of ₹2,000 for five months.
A total of 365 vending stalls were constructed on the first floor of the MUDA parking facility to accommodate the relocated vendors. The vendors have been shifted to their new location, marking a significant step towards organizing street vending in Shillong.
The relocation is part of a broader initiative to improve the city’s infrastructure and ensure that street vendors operate in designated areas. The Meghalaya High Court had directed the state government to clearly demarcate vending zones and maintain vigilance to prevent illegal encroachments.
