Tura(Meghalaya), Sep 8: Various NGOs of the village of Rongjeng in East Garo Hills (EGH) have written to the deputy commissioner seeking an investigation alleging that the construction of the upcoming Rongjeng Community Degree College is coming up as per the DPR.
In a complaint by the GSU, ASWA, GSMC and RYWA, the NGOs alleged that the upcoming institution is being built differently from what is supposed to be in the Detailed Project Report (DPR).
Expressing their disappointment at the delay in the completion of the project, which is estimated at over Rs 10 crores, the NGOs questioned the engineer as well as the contractor on various changes that have been made from the original DPR.
“The DPR shows the building to be of 3 storeys along with a boy and girls hostel. However the construction does not match the estimate. Further the doors to the boys and girls hostel are made of plywood and will not last,” said the NGOs through the complaint.
They also pointed to one floor from the entire RCC building not being constructed at all and had earlier appealed for it to be done. They were apparently assured by the engineer and contractor that they would do their best in getting it done.
The NGOs have now sought a detailed investigation into the matter so that the building can be done as per the original DPR.
The contractor in question however has denied any wrong doing and clarified that the changes were done by the education department. As per him, the DPR has been changed by the department concerned and the construction has come as per the new plan.
“The NGOs should question the department concerned. We have done the work as has been given to us. In this day and age of RTI, I would be a fool to not do work as has been prescribed. They need to check their facts,” said the contractor.
Meanwhile the NGOs in question have said that they would be holding a meeting with various stakeholders on the issue and seek answers from the government.
