Jorabat , Aug 20: Surface communication between Guwahati and Shillong remained heavily disrupted for the second consecutive day on Friday due to an indefinite blockade at Jorabat by a Guwahati-based transport body.
The blockade has been enforced to protest the attack on Assam-registered vehicles during a KSU rally in Shillong on Wednesday.
Protesters at Jorabat said they will not withdraw until the Meghalaya government takes responsibility and compensates the affected vehicle owners and passengers.
“The continued silence from the Meghalaya government will invite a more intensified blockade,” a protester told South Asia Views. “They must accept responsibility. How will they ensure the safety of people from Assam?”
Another protester warned of escalation. “Only Meghalaya will have to bear the brunt. We will be forced to enforce blockades at other points too,” he said, adding that the state’s economy would suffer.
