Shillong (Meghalaya), Dec 15 : The Meghalaya High Court has taken note of the progress made by the Shillong Municipal Board in identifying vending zones in Liatumkhrah area, a case related to a PIL filed by Philip Khrawbok Shati and others. The court was informed that out of 43 claims of vendors, 14 vendors were already included in the list published by the Provisional Town Vending Committee (PTVC), and 15 vendors were found to be genuine after a hearing.
The PTVC has resolved to finalize the list of street vendors in the area and notify designated vending zones. A sub-committee of the PTVC is formulating a standard operating procedure for the purpose of hearing claims and objections with the approval of the Hawkers’ Association. The Shillong Municipal Board has been directed to file a further report in the form of an affidavit by January 28, 2026, when the matter will be listed again.
The court expects the location of the hawkers to be completed by the first week of January 2026. The case is being closely monitored by the Meghalaya High Court, which is ensuring that the authorities implement the Street Vendors (Protection of Livelihood and Regulation of Street Vending) Act effectively.
