Resubelpara(Meghalaya), Aug 19: NGOs from the Dainadubi area of North Garo Hills (NGH) today, Aug 19, met the deputy commissioner of the district to seek the repair of the Gairon bridge that connects the village to Kharkutta.
The NGOs who met the DC today to discuss the matter were the GSU, GSMC, AAYF, AHAM, PJAC, DCYO, AGPF and NGHPWO.
The bridge is an important landmark and has been damaged to the extent that vehicles are unable to move through. The subway that has been made nearby to help people and vehicles get across too has been damaged due to the rains. People have been seen helping vehicles to cross the small river that runs under the now defunct bridge.
The NGOs, through the memo, have requested the immediate construction of a subway across the River Chil on which the Gairong bridge is built.
“The bridge is on the verge of collapse and if it does it is going to cause a grave problem for the people of the area. It is one of the only ways of connecting to two sections of the district and thousands would be affected. We have also informed the chief minister of the problem and the matter of the bridge repair will possibly be taken up soon. He has not responded yet to our pleas,” said the NGOs through their memo.
The NGOs asked the DC to order for the immediate repair of the bridge or the formation of a subway to ease the problems of the people.
“We hope the matter is taken seriously as the people are really suffering. Their daily life has been hampered and this needs to be immediately corrected,” said the NGO.
