Shillong ( Meghalaya), Apr 5 : Acting on specific tip-off, on Tuesday , 04 April 2023 troops of 172 Bn BSF Meghalaya seized a truck carrying huge quantity of processed betel nuts worth rupees 1.12 Crore from Umkiang area of District East Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya.
The apprehended driver revealed that the consignments of betel nuts originated from Myanmar and was being taken to Barpeta from Silchar, Assam. FIR lodged in the case and accused driver along with seized items were handed over to PS – Umkiang for further legal action. This is the third consecutive seizure of huge quantity of betel nuts from the same area.
In another operation , troops of 4 Bn BSF Meghalaya seized clothing items (sarees) worth more than rupees 13 lakhs from the bordering area of Muktapur West Jaintia Hills, which were meant to be smuggled to Bangladesh. The seized items have been handed over to customs office Dawki for further action.
