Shillong (Meghalaya), June 16 : The Second Phase of the Locality Beautification and Enhancement Competition under Tourism Department, Government of Meghalaya was launched on Tuesday at the Office of the Deputy Commissioner, East Khasi Hills District, here .
Sanction letters were handed out to representatives of the 23 localities who have applied for various works under the Phase II of the programme, such as painting and cleaning works, wall art, installation of signages, plantations, street furniture, etc. Participating localities were briefed on the activities to be taken up and inputs, learnings and feedback that the office has obtained from the first set of participating localities was also shared.
It was informed that for both phases, prizes to the tune of Rs. 10,00,000/ will be awarded to best localities, along with additional prizes for best artists and innovations on the following criteria: Cleanliness, Public Amenities, Community Market Area, Safety & Security and Sustainability. Key areas of evaluation include creativity, innovations applied, and social impact. Popular vote will also be part of the evaluation process.
With respect to the first phase of the Locality Beautification and Enhancement Competition which was launched in September 2021, a majority of the participating localities have completed the works and submitted reports to this office. The full funds have been released to such localities.
34 localities had participated and a great number of innovative works were taken up which have led to an overall improvement of community spaces in terms of safety, cleanliness, environmental consciousness, aesthetics and overall appeal. The Deputy Commissioner also informed that exemplary execution of the works was displayed by many of the localities, and involved the active participation of youth, women and local talents.
It was also informed that localities that have completed their submission of utilisation certificates can apply for a maintenance fund that can be up to 10% of the original fund sanctioned.
To apply for the maintenance fund, participating localities will also be required to pledge an equal amount to be raised from other sources. This is to encourage localities to partner with institutions and agencies for collaborative efforts and joint action on the maintenance and sustainability of the cleanliness and beautification initiatives.
