Shillong, Oct 1: Four policemen have been suspended and two highway check posts demolished after the KSU accused police of extorting money from truckers in East Khasi Hills.
Videos doing rounds on social media showed KSU members barging into temporary check posts at Mawkhanu under Diengpasoh PS and Thangshalai under Mawryngkneng PS, alleging illegal collection from heavy vehicles.
SP East Khasi Hills Vivek Syiem said SP City Dangsan Khyriem and senior officers were rushed for a preliminary enquiry. It was found that Diengpasoh police had been posted at Mawkhanu for naka duty to prevent theft and dacoity on the highway.
No cash was recovered from the personnel at Mawkhanu or from the shed at Thangshalai during verification, but the police said that alone does not prove or disprove the allegations caught on video.
Taking serious note, the district police have placed one head constable and three UB constables under suspension pending enquiry and transferred the Officer-in-Charge of Diengpasoh PS. A special team was despatched on Wednesday morning to both spots and the two temporary sheds have been pulled down.
Reiterating zero tolerance for corruption, the police have asked truck drivers not to pay money on the highway and to report any demand immediately on 112 or at Police Control Room Shillong on 6009196479.
