Shillong, July 30: Mawlai produced a second-half masterclass to hammer Laitkor 5-0 in the Shillong Premier League 2026 at SSA Stadium on Thursday, the most dominant result of the season so far.
The first 45 minutes suggested another tight SPL contest, with the league having already seen three 1-0 wins and a 1-1 draw. That changed the moment the teams returned from the break.
Inside the opening minute of the second half, Jestibor Mawlong forced a save from Laitkor keeper Deranius Wahlang and Damangbhalang Chyne rattled the crossbar. The rebound fell to Samlang Rympei, who smashed it in to break the deadlock in the 49th minute.
Mawlai did not let up. Three minutes later Fairming Suting raced onto a through ball and calmly slotted past the goalie for 2-0. The pressure kept coming, and in the 55th minute Robertson Khongriah’s cross from the left was turned in by Wadshwa Latoo to make it 3-0. Three goals in six minutes effectively ended the contest.
Basuklang Bina, who was solid throughout, added a fourth in the 71st when his shot took a deflection and crept over the line. Substitute Bajiedlang Rangslang completed the rout in the 86th, driving forward from midfield and firing a powerful finish for 5-0.
Laitkor tried to respond in the second half but managed only a couple of efforts that never troubled Mawlai goalkeeper Lambhamiki Lamare.
The emphatic will boost Mawlai, two-time SPL champions in 2022 and 2023 as they look to reclaim the title after finishing third last year.
The league resumes on 4 August at 4pm with Sawmer taking on Rangdajied United. Sawmer lost their opener 1-0 to defending champions Langsning, while Rangdajied were held 1-1 by Meghalaya Police.
