Shillong, July 11: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Saturday directed all Deputy Commissioners to remain on high alert as continuous monsoon rains have affected 32 villages in Meghalaya, with Garo Hills and parts of Khasi Hills bearing the brunt.
Chairing a video review, the Chief Minister said the current spell since early July has triggered landslides, landslips and flash floods. No loss of life has been reported so far.
With IMD forecasting heavy to very heavy rain till July 15 under an orange alert, Sangma asked districts to ensure immediate response, keep field teams and machinery ready, and restore cut-off road connectivity on priority.
He specifically reviewed erosion at the approach to Mineng Bailey Bridge near Gasuapara in South Garo Hills, where only light vehicles are allowed. Temporary restoration was ordered on priority.
The CM also directed swift delivery of relief to affected families and uninterrupted essential supplies. Districts were told to monitor the situation closely and send regular updates to the state.
The public has been urged to avoid landslide-prone stretches, flooded streams and non-essential hill travel during heavy rain, and to follow lightning safety advisories.
Relief and restoration work is underway, and the situation is being watched closely.
