Jowai(Meghalaya), June 25 :Synjuk Ki Rangbahkur leaders met JHADC Chief Executive Member Thombor Shiwat Thursday, calling for urgent legislation to preserve the matrilineal clan lineage system of the Khasi and Jaintia people.
The delegation of President R. L. Kharpran, General Secretary Raphael Warjri, Spokesperson R. L. Blah, and Executive Members Manstudy Nongrem and J. L. Khongshei told the CEM that the traditional system is central to the social and cultural identity of indigenous communities and needs legal protection.
They pressed for a constitutional mechanism to formally recognize the Dorbar Kur and to empower the Rangbah Kur to carry out their customary duties in upholding traditions, customs, and lineage practices. The group said such a law would reinforce indigenous institutions and protect the matrilineal heritage for the next generation.
