Shillong (Meghalaya), March 19: In a groundbreaking move, the Government of Meghalaya has launched the Young People’s Action Group (YPAG), a pioneering initiative aimed at empowering youth to drive climate action and shape the state’s development agenda.
The launch event, attended by Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui, marked a significant shift in the state’s approach to youth engagement. “Climate change and development must be addressed together, and young people have a critical role in identifying solutions and taking responsibility for sustainable development,” Rymbui said.
YPAG is designed to be a gamechanger, providing a structured platform for youth to co-create solutions in climate resilience, health, education, and community well-being. The initiative is supported by UNICEF India and the Centre for Policy and is aligned with the Meghalaya Youth Policy 2021.
The launch event featured a high-powered panel discussion on “Harnessing Youth for Climate Action in Meghalaya,” which brought together experts and young leaders to discuss the state’s environmental challenges and the role of youth in addressing them.
“Through YPAG, we’re not just listening to young people – we’re working alongside them to shape policies and programmes that impact their lives,” said Dr. Madhulika Jonathan, UNICEF Chief of Field Office for Northeastern States.
With its focus on inclusion, community engagement, and human-centered design, YPAG is poised to be a model for youth-driven development initiatives across India. As Meghalaya’s youth take the reins, the state’s development trajectory is set to get a significant boost.
